God that picture made me cry!
Miss Vivienne is fabulous in Tommy as is the rest of her cast, highly recommend it. Is a million times better than Joseph. totally different, dont expect to be dancing in the isles, singing along and counting the different colours but is still fabulous and much more "me" that Joseph ever was. Has a bit of a Rent feel to it to me which is always a good thing...only a tiny bit...oh I cant explain, just go see it!
Rosemary i very much doubt I'll be there tomorro night now, Im not feeling good. totally exhausted and think im coming down with something so prob not a good idea to go. Sorry - hope you have a great time though. Send Viv my love and tell her I'll be in touch soon with the details she wanted.

Well, you made it after all, Shirl!
Really good show, very well done. Viv is fab and we get to see her act, speak dialogue (which is a first - wasn't any in Joseph!) and sing loads. Not to mention doing a spot of welding! Jonathan Wilkes is good too and very nice to look at I have to say... Weirdest thing though, when he speaks he sounds spookily like Lee W! Same kind of voice, same accent.
The ensemble are quite young - first professional job for some of them. They do a lot, play loads of different roles, from soldiers to children (bet they had fun doing that bit!), lots of costume changes and work really hard. Nice voices too. Viv's voice is amazing. The bit where she goes a bit mad is impressive. Nice to see her legs, lol, and she gets to wear a wedding dress.
It's all done on one set, which has a lot of steel structures including a walkway/platforms above the stage and is quite kind of futuristic, even though it's set in the past (1940-1960). There are mirrors that come down from the ceiling and stuff, and some fireworks. There's a live band on the stage itself. All very rocky (but then, it is supposed to be a rock opera!). Also very loud, so be warned if you sit near speakers! The finale is great fun, lots of getting up and joining in!
Would recommend people see it when it's near them.
Did the stage door thing. Viv is fine, loving doing the show. Was lovely to see her again, especially on my home ground. Looking forward to Friday when I'm going again.
By the way, Viv said that she didn't know her last Joseph was her last one until she lost her voice next day and couldn't go on again. She also said that, in a way, it made it easier for her. Didn't think she'd have been able to cope too well with a proper last show, especially if we'd all been there to give her a sendoff. She'd have been in bits.

Back from my second trip to Tommy. Enjoyed it just as much, good to see it from a different angle, upstairs (front row of the box we were in so had a great view). Viv was fabulous - her solo, 'Smash The Mirror' really shows off her voice. I really like her duet with Mr Walker just before that too, 'I Believe My Own Eyes'.
Didn't see her afterwards though. She'd said on Monday she'd probably stay in to eat between shows so didn't bother waiting. Gina got Jonathan's autograph, so she was happy - think she was rather taken with him! He was out very quickly, as he was the other night, and we just happened to catch him as we passed the stage door, so if anyone's going and wants to see him, don't take too long getting outside!

Glad you and Gina enjoyed yourselves. I really do love Tommy, is a fab show and all 3 times I've sat watching Viv in the show ive been so incredible proud of her and realised just how wasted her talents where in joseph. Viv was fabulous - her solo, 'Smash The Mirror' really shows off her voice. I really like her duet with Mr Walker just before that too, 'I Believe My Own Eyes'. Yeah I love those songs too, also love her duet with lee in the first act "Twenty-One" I love the bit nea the end with "the tommy fan" just rang a few alarm bells and get to hear Jonathans own natural voice there too and reminds me of a certain someone! She's not the only one taken with Mr Wilkes, my heart had a little flutter when we met him and also the first time I saw the show and he walked infront of me, trod on my toe and just looked down at me (the only one on the front row) and gave me a cheeky grin and a wink. He's so lovely and polite at the stage door. And honked his horn and waved as drove off - very cute!

Yeah I love those songs too, also love her duet with lee in the first act "Twenty-One" Oh yes, and she gets to have a good old snog with Lee - go Viv, lol! Actually she gets to do a fair bit of snogging! Oh dear, 'Sally Simpson' - 'she knew from the start deep down in her heart, that she and Tommy were worlds apart'.... And that speaking voice - is it Jonathan Wilkes, or Lee Waterworth in disguise? Spooked me again yesterday! Yeah, he is. I handed him Gina's programme to sign and he added a kiss this time. I'd like to think he thought it was for me, lol! He went off down the road with one of the other guys with a little posse trailing after him. And we passed that car in the car park, very nice indeed!

Viv said she'll see you in Liverpool, Hels, so it rather looks as though you have to go doesn't it? Seen the show again this afternoon! Decided to go down and say goodbye to Viv and just had to go in really. Had a very nice afternoon, saying hi to Viv (having asked Jonathan if she was in yet as he was outside when I arrived, lol, and he went to find out for me too!), then sitting with coffee and a doughnut on the theatre veranda in the sun, overlooking the sea. Then saw the show and said goodbye to Viv afterwards. She had quite a crowd to sign for etc, which was lovely to see! JW didn't come out but he asked for programmes etc to be taken in for him to sign, which I thought was nice. I've liked the show more each time I've seen it, as I've taken in a bit more each time. The way the finale builds is fabulous, makes the hair on my neck stand up when the bass in 'Listening To You' starts pounding. They all have a great time bouncing around the stage to Pinball Wizard! As I said before, I'd recommend people to go and see it!

saying hi to Viv (having asked Jonathan if she was in yet as he was outside when I arrived, lol, and he went to find out for me too!) Oh that boys so d**n cute! Thats what i like to hear Now thats just too cute, none of our Jo boys would have done that! Although having said that Shaun did take a programme up to lee for me years and years ago on the tour for him to sign. Just nice to hear that a so called "celeb" is so nice, down to earth and thinks about his fans. I absolutley love this show. Not just coz its our Viv, bit its just a really upbeat show and much deeper than the likes of joseph. Love the music, love the actors, they really are a talented bunch of people. just a good night out and always gogroeus to see viv up on stage and showing off her talents much more than she did in Jo. Is the ideal medication for stressed out Vet Nurses who have had crappy days/weeks, puts a smile on your face and refreshes ready to go back to weork again. Everyone at work commented on how much more cheerful and happy i was the day after seeing it. thats what a good show and lovelye train journey gossiping does

Just nice to hear that a so called "celeb" is so nice, down to earth and thinks about his fans. Having thought about it, I suspect his staying inside may have had something to with the England match...maybe he was watching highlights or something. JW's a big footie fanatic I believe!

Review from our local paper, the Yellow Advertiser (30th March 2005) -
Rock On Tommy!
By Paul Giles
The Cliffs Pavilion rocked to the sound of Tommy last week.
The rock opera follows the life of deaf, dumb and blind kid - Tommy - who is abused and ridiculed until he becomes a pinball wizard.
The two hour show offered a wonderful display of lights, dancing, singing and a lot of immense music.
Jonathan Wilkes, who has sung alongside his best mate Robbie Williams at the Royal Albert Hall, plays the main character, Tommy.
Jonathan’s stage presence and connection with the audience are superb throughout the show, while the cast of 14 attack the stage with well choreographed dance routines and supply the show with the songs which act as a narrative for the storyline.
The set of the show looks more like a futuristic backdrop for a gig but the cast use the space to its maximum potential, acting out parachute jumps and house scenes.
For anyone who loves rock music the show is a must. Six musicians supply the backing music throughout, taking advantage of the excellent sound system at The cliffs.
At the end of the first half a rendition of Pinball Wizard took people into the interval and by the end of the show the cast had everyone dancing in the aisles.
Shame there 's no mention of Viv though.
