Listening Party Story
April 17, 2004
I was on a total high even the days prior to going to Indianapolis. Since I knew I'd be totally restless, I decided after work to start my drive.
At night, and little traffic which was wonderful as well. I had my cds with me and a cell phone nearby as well. I was ready for a new experience all together. I drove about 3 1/2 hours overall before stopping for the night 2 hours or so north of Indianapolis at a decent motel. Did I sleep? About 3 hours overall. When I did get ready, I must have fussed over what to wear and stuff. I had no idea which of the 2 outfits I had with me I should wear to make a good impression. I left the motel and got a small bite for breakfast (too excited to eat alot but i didnt wanna pass out later on LOL) and filled up my vehicle with gas as well.
I made it there in good time despite pulling off for about a 1/2 hour rest stop and making a phone call to get tickets for a concert I am planning to go to in August as well (and I got the ticket too!!!).
I got there early at the studios despite taking a bit of a wrong turn once I exited the freeway. Cindy (the Street Team Leader) was there along with a few others there as well waiting to be let in, then later on, more people arrived. I met many old friends I haven't seen in a long time, and met many new people as well.
Cindy asked me if I would help make sure that everyone got a name tag and signed a poster thing for Darren as they were being let in - I agreed. After having to be searched for contraband and stuff, I was let in, and did poster/name tag duty. I do have to thank 2 ladies who agreed to take my purse and gift for Darren up stairs to the studio with them and saved me a seat up front as well. Overall, about 50 people attended the Street Team session.
We split into groups, and played a trivia game. Prizes were various Dzine themed items. Also a prize was given to the person who came from the longest distance, and also based on a sticker on the back of our name tags.
I also passed around a congratulatory card for Leonie's new baby and a get well card sent to me for a Street Teamer from NJ named Ellen (who is a friend of mine and a very good friend to many). Everyone circulated & signed both cards, and later on I even got Leonie to sign the card for Ellen too.
We signed the confidentiality agreements as well and got a survey to complete regarding music (sites, concerts, etc) too. Leonie came in to talk to us a bit and we all got some refreshments that were brought in as well for us.
The album in several words how can I describe it - beautiful, deep, emotional, spiritual, and electronic. The lyrics are out of this world, realistic, and deep. A few songs made me very emotional for sure. The lyrics hit home with me - I've had similar experiences in the past. It was like Darren had been looking into my soul, and perhaps others as well who have experienced heartbreak of some kind in the past or going through it now.
After the listening part the street teamers we had brainstorming on some promo stuff with CindyG and Leonie. Many great ideas were shared through the room by all there.
Leonie got a call on her mobile phone, and it was Darren on the other end. She had asked him where he was or something! Darren was brought into the room (Sharon and Robert were with him also but they stood on the side). Darren graciously answered many fan questions and he even answered one of my questions as well.
Then Leonie & Sharon told us we were allowed a picture with Darren and one item signed by Darren . Sharon was kind enough to take the pictures for each person with your own camera too.
To make it easy they went one row at a time, and I was 2nd in line. I had NO time to be nervous AT all. After the first girl went up, it was my turn.
I went up with the book and my IMY cd single. I presented a special book of messages & stuff to Darren, and he did look at the book some, he commented on the hard work that I put into it, and that he would look at it later when there was more time. He signed my cd single for me (why did i choose my IMY single among the many I am - its my favorite released track off Spin) . He put his arm me in a hug way AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (what a moment for me..I've been dreaming of it for many years!!) and told me I smelled so good so being the good girl I am (yes I am a good girl!!!). I told him he did too and put my arm around him too. Whatever he wears, its INTOXICATING for sure, and for the record my fragrance that I wore that day (and will always wear now) - Intuition by Estee Lauder. Sharon snapped the picture which turned out great (Pictures do not do Darren justice - seeing in person you can truly see how beautiful he is inside AND outside!!!). I thanked Darren & Leonie then I had to go from there to allow the next person their chance. The weather was gorgeous, sunny, and warm that day just like the atmosphere inside the studio there as well.
I rang one of my best friends to tell her about my wonderful experience, then called many others as well. They all appreciated hearing my story and could sense the excitement & happiness in my voice as well. I waited around a bit and chatted with many others as well.
Then later on, I met up another good friend prior to her attending the fan session as well then I had to leave Indianapolis and head home for a 6 hour ride home playing mainly Darren's music on cds I had with me.
I have to say Darren smells good, looks good, and most importantly appreciates and loves his fans alot. How many artists would do this for their fans? Not many. He was gracious, kind, well mannered, had a great rapport with all of us in the room, and has a wonderful sense of humor too.
Also a big Thank you to Cindy, Leonie, Sharon, and most importantly to Darren for a wonderful day of memories I wont ever forget and for all their hard work for making this day a reality.
To sum up part of it like the famous Mastercard commercials - $120 for gas, food, and lodging, $20 for book materials, and getting to meet your #1 favorite singer/songwriter and be able to have a GREAT day like I did - PRICELESS!!!!!

I've had the chance to reflect and think about what I heard that day. I have to say the lyrics are the most personal, deep, and emotional that I have ever heard - those alone sold me on the cd. I know I am not big on some of the electronica on it but I can deal with that part.
Words move me the most and what I heard - the sheer emotion in the words and vocals - made me feel, and that whats important to me. I've been down the dark roads in my past too - I know that looking back they made me stronger inside and ready to face the future more. Many of the lyrics I heard are even more emotional than songs like "Santa Monica", "Crash and Burn", "The Lover After Me", "Like It or Not" and "Where You Want to Be" - songs that are guaranteed on a dark day to me to make the tears flow for me.
This cd definitely pulled at my heart strings for sure, and a few songs I felt as if he looked in my past and perhaps others as well. One song for sure - I was really ready to cry a bit cause i've felt that way as well too past and sometimes now as well.
I am proud of Darren for baring his heart and soul on alot of this cd, and I am ready to tell people that its an amazing cd, and to go out and get it and also get his stuff from the past too and to see the progression he has made as a singer and songwriter. I hope this cd (and a few others) means a return to the charts and radio of songs with meaningful lyrics and not all sugary pop or hip hop music that seems to be the rage now.
