Ronan Keating
Ronan Keating has had ten years of chart success since joining Boyzone at 16, selling 17million albums. But while at the height of success in 1998 he lost his mother to breast cancer, and shortly afterwards set
up the Marie Keating Cancer Awareness Fund, with the aim to increase knowledge about breast cancer in Ireland. Today he sings 'I Hope You Dance', a track off his new album, Ten Years of Hits, which is
released in October. The profits made from this single will be donated to another charity, Breast Cancer Care.
'I Hope You Dance'
Single Released: 27th September, 2004
I Hope You Dance is similar to Ronan's classic singles like When You Say Nothing At All and If Tomorrow Never Comes. The money raised from the single will go towards supporting Breast Cancer Care. It's already
been a huge number one Country Billboard hit for Nashville icon Lee Ann Womack - spending 5 weeks at number one in 2001- and Ronan says he
fell in love with it the minute he heard it. The track is taken from the forthcoming Ronan Keating 10 Years of Hits album which is out on 11th October.
Ronan's Mother's Death
In February 1998 Ronan's mother Marie died from breast cancer when she was just 51. Ronan and his three brothers Ciaran, Garard and Gary, and
sister Linda set up The Marie Keating Cancer Awareness Fund. "The songs I've written for my mother still get me. And there are some beautiful songs out there, such as Celine Dion's "Have You Ever Been in Love?", "Hello Again" by Neil Diamond and Terry Jacks' original
version of "Seasons in the Sun" which remind me of her. But you won't catch me crying. I just wish my mother was alive because she'd be loving it, seeing me, her baby - because I was always the youngest in
the house - with my children." In October 2003 Ronan walked the length of Ireland to raise EUR15,000 for the cancer charity and continues to support the charity set up in his mother's name. His daughter, Marie,
is also named after his mother.
Duet with Cat Stevens
Cat Stevens and Ronan sing a duet on 10 Years of Hits with Steven's classic song, Father and Son. Cat Stevens was in the news because he was refused entry to the US for being on a blacklist of people who posed a threat to US national security. Cat Stevens' last single was
Another Saturday Night released in 1974 but bookmakers have put odds on Ronan and Cat clinching a Christmas number 1 (25/1) if the song is
released. The pair formed a close friendship after Boyzone released a cover of Father and Son in 1995. Louis Walsh signed Ronan to Boyzone when hearing him perform an acoustic version of Father and Son when he was sixteen.
Ronan The Family Man
Ronan hardly lives the rock star lifestyle. He spends free weekends getting up at 6.30am to play with the kids and walk the dog. "We're no Osbournes, but it makes us happy," he says. "The children are flying
up - my son is coming on five now. In the last couple of weeks he's been going round singing my single, which is strange. He hasn't really understood what I did before. He limits his time away to two weeks
these days, he says -"It's just too painful to miss my kids growing up."
Ronan The Film Star
Ronan is starring in gangster film Guns, Money and homecooking with Vinnie Jones later on this year. He's never had an acting lesson in his life and claims to be 'very nervous'. Keating apparently got down
to "the last four" for a part in the King Arthur movie being shot in Ireland with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.
Ronan's Last Appearance On The Shown
In June Ronan was here to promote Christian Aid's campaign for Trade Justice. Keating travelled with Christian Aid to discover for himself the disastrous impact imports from the west have on the lives of the
people in Ghana. In February of 2004, Ronan performed She Believes in Me, taken from his third solo album Turn it On.
Biographical
Ronan Keating, 27, was born in County Dublin, the youngest of five children. While working in a shoe shop at 16 he auditioned for the boy band, Boyzone, got the job and left school without qualifications. Within a year, his band was at No 2 in the UK singles chart with "Love
Me For a Reason". Boyzone went on to become the first group since The Beatles to debut at No 1 with their first four albums. Since the band split in 1999, Keating has been the only member to forge a successful
solo career. In all, he has had eight UK No 1 singles. He lives in Ireland and is married to ex-model Yvonne. They have two children, Jack, 5, and three-year-old Marie.
Ronan split from Boyzone in 1999. At the time it was reported that Ronan had fallen out with his other bandmates, but they are now friends. Ronan continued his solo career by working with manager Louis
Walsh to set up Westlife, but they parted company in 2003 after working with each other for eight years. Despite speculation that Louis and Ronan have fallen out, latest reports suggest they are still
friends.
Westlife
Keating became involved with the band as co-manager in April 1998. Westlife have had 17 consecutive UK top 5 hits and four number ones.
In March, 2004, Bryan McFadden quit Westlife to spend more time with his wife, Kerry, and children. The band release Allow Us To Be Frank
on November 8th.
