Blond, Irish, ex-Boy Band…. So far, so good. But then there are the soppy songs, the reputation for being boring (his words, not ours), and that spat with Louis Walsh.
NewWoman.co.uk caught up with Ronan for an exclusive chat, and gave him the chance to set the record straight. And we kinda liked what he had to say for himself – Ronan, we love!
Ps. We love what he has to say about Pete Doherty.
Pps. He so goes there with the sex thing. Good boy.
So first thing’s first. What happened with the last album?
'Well I thought I was indestructible and could do any type of music I wanted. I wanted to be a rock star like Bono. But with this album I’ve gone back to the more traditional type of Ronan music, ballads like ‘When you say nothing at all’ and ‘If tomorrow never comes.’
You said recently that you’re fed up with people thinking you’re boring.
At the same time it doesn’t really bother me that people think that. For me it’s if people like my music or not and that’s what matters. It shouldn’t matter if I’m exciting or not. I know I’m exciting, I know I’m cool, but that’s not the point. Because I’m not throwing things out the window and doing drugs and sleeping with every other girl, I’m just a normal guy. It doesn’t bother me, I don’t give a nutse.
Are you thinking of a certain Pete Doherty by any chance?
Well, how sad is it that he’s a role model for youth today? It’s disgusting. I saw him blowing up heroine or something in a pipe today. I thought it’sf**king revolting, man. Get him in rehab. It’s sad as sh**.
We were shocked to see you in the buff in the papers the other day, save a pint of Guinness hiding your modesty. Tell us about it…
It was for testicular and prostate cancer. I laughed when I was first asked and said ‘You’re off your f*****g head.’ Then I just came around to it and thought ‘Well, why not?’ I’d been working out, I felt in good shape. I haven’t got too many spare tyres so I thought I’d give it a go.
We thought you looked pretty good compared to some of the others. What were JK and Joel thinking?
My wife said it looked revolting. The two guys in the back of the cab. One of the guys looks like he’s got no mickey. He’s sitting there and honest to God, it’s like, ‘Did you get rid of it altogether, mate?’
Would you ever go the whole way?
No, I’m not up for showing my bit off.
Was it really unsexy?
I did it in a house rather than a studio and everyone left the room bar the photographer - that made it a bit easier for me. I’m not in the habit of doing full frontal nudes very often!
What about this whole Louis Walsh thing?
It’s no big deal. I don’t think people care, I don’t care. For me it’s
boring. But if you want to know about it I’ll tell you.
Go on, indulge us! I said my bit about him. He said enough bits about me. I won’t lower myself to getting into an argument with him. It’s not what I want. I would like it just to go away.
What’s the situation now?
There is none. Supposedly we made up and shook hands but I haven’t seen the guy. I don’t know if you’ve heard that but I heard it somewhere.
What do you make of all the rumours about you?
I don’t mind things like that. It’s all media spin so as long as it’s
not hurtful to anyone.
Is it hard managing a career and family - do you still find time for a good shag?
We seem to spend more time doing more and more and then have less time together, especially with three kids. Every now and then we’ll go away to Paris or London. But for me, just running upstairs I find fantastically sexy.
Huh?
Well, the kids are watching TV and we’ll just spend a few minutes together. Or maybe an hour. It depends how I’m feeling. (Laughs). By the time I get to bed at night, I’m exhausted. But I seem to have this thing where if I’m f*****g wrecked, there’s always a little bit of energy left for sex. It drives my wife mad.
We’re not surprised. Does she go out and party with you as well?
Yeah, but she’s the one at home with the kids all day, and I’ll come home tired from work. We’re lucky in that we both have a pretty similar sex drive. It’s very important in a relationship. For me, sex has been incredibly important. It can be one of the strengths of a relationship.
Number one I think is paying attention to each other.
Number two is understanding each other
Number three is being honest with each other.
Number four is sex with each other.
What do you make of Take That reuniting?
I went to see them on Friday. It was a great show. I have to say it was one of the most entertaining shows I’ve ever been to. There was no expense spared. I really admire them because they could have just put a black stage up, done a couple of dance moves, got a couple of dancers and made an absolute fortune. But they spent a lot of money on the stage. I liked that. They worked hard on the dance routines. Howard and Jason are probably inbetter shape than they were when they were in the band. They are amazing. They wear everything those guys.
Would it inspire you to get back with Boyzone?
For the first five or ten minutes I did have chills. You go, ‘Wow!’ You miss the shrieks and screams. But it’s a different thing now. I’ve worked hard at what I’ve created and I don’t know if I want to throw that away. But Boyzone could reform without me, I wouldn’t mind.
Would they survive?
I don’t know! (laughs)
