Stephen Gately
in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Interview by Andrew Manktelow and Alexa Williamson
Known to most as one of the hunky singers from pop group Boyzone and Irish Personality of the Year, Stephen Gately is now also a West End stage star. Playing Joseph in the new production of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, this is his theatre debut which has been hailed by critics as "[handling] his vocals with panache" (The Stage) and "sing[ing] charmingly" (The Guardian).
Ticketmaster caught up with Stephen recently to find about his new stage career, his plans as a solo pop star and a bit of Boyzone gossip.
Your role as Joseph is your theatre debut, how does it feel to "tread the boards"?
It's fantastic and a great buzz going out to a new audience every night. It's very different from touring with the band as the audience are there to listen and to enjoy the whole experience of Joseph, whereas with Boyzone, we played in front of mainly screaming fans.
Which do you think is harder appearing in a play or on stage in a concert?
They are both so different as the audiences are different, although when I was in the band I had the other guys around me as support, I now have the cast members for support.
How did you prepare for the role?
I did have some vocal coaching before the rehearsals started, but I did not watch the show as I wanted to do it in my own way.
Are there any other roles that you would like to play?
Yes, I would love to play the part of Christian in Moulin Rouge.
Was the change from being a member of a boy band to being a solo artist hard?
It was at first but you have a team of people around you all the time so you are not alone.
Are you planning to release any songs from the show as a single or album? And, are you yourself working on any new material?
I would love to release a Joseph song and yes, I have been working on my own material but for now I am just concentrating on Joseph.
Are you still in close touch with the other members of Boyzone?
I am still in touch with everyone except Ronan which is a shame.
Have you watched Keith on Coronation Street at all? Do you think he's a good actor?
I think he's great, Keith is my best friend and whatever he does he puts his heart and soul into it.
love
